Captains log Day Four
Texas to Santa Fe, NM
After the breakfast from hell the first stop was the VW Bug Ranch burial ground. Bizarre but a great idea burying 5 VW beetles in the ground and creating a tourist sensation. Just buy a spray can and add to the creation. Something Jeremy Clarkson could do well to copy. That would certainly be 2 fingers up to his Planners. He could use all the vehicles he’s managed to total over the years.
Amarillo - what a disappointment. We must remember to tell Tony Christie and Peter Kay not to bother! Sadly it’s a complete shambles of a dead town. Needless to say we just drove on through.
Outside of Amarillo we stopped at another vehicle burial ground this time for Cadillacs. 10 Cadillacs buried headfirst into a field with as many visitors as you’d see at Stonehenge only this time armed with spray paint. Sadly while Peter was posing for a photo we realised he was perched on a wet creation from previous artists.
The rest of the day was spent on a marathon drive of 350 miles across boring wasteland until we approached Santa Fe when the scenery became much more interesting. Snow capped mountains sparkled in the distance as we climbed up to 6,000 feet above sea level. Arriving in Santa Fe we found a hotel in the middle of the old town where we decided to base ourselves for the next couple of days. This will give us a break from driving and a chance to explore this gem of a city.
Sadly Peter is in the dog house tonight as we discovered he had left his iPad in the last motel (after being reminded to check the room). Imagine his horror when using “find my” app it pinged back a location in the previous hotel some 350 miles back. The thought of retracing our journey was just too much so hopefully we’ve sorted it to be couriered to Williams, Arizona awaiting our arrival in a couple of days.
On a brighter note we drowned our sorrows with a good bottle of wine and possibly the best burger we’ve ever had.
Tomorrow is lie in day …………..
Brings a whole new meaning to 'Paint My Wagon' (yet another song you two have driven to / through π
